Event Participation

2019 Event Schedule:

     Sept. 24-26 @ the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex (19783 US-29, Chatham, VA 24531)

     Sept 24: Expo in the Evening (4-7pm) 

               This program is FREE and open to the public. We encourage the business community, administrators, mentors, parents, counselors, teachers, and students to attend. Experience hands-on career sector activities with regional employers. Learn about school divisions' Career & Technical Education programs. Talk to area colleges about academic programs and financial aid. 

     Sept. 25 & 26: Student Days (8:30am-2:30pm)

                 This part of the event is closed to the public. Regional schools attend at scheduled times throughout the day. Public school visits for Danville & Martinsville cities, Halifax, Henry, Patrick, & Pittsylvania counties are scheduled through their planning committee member.

                 If you are interested in scheduling a visit for a private school, home school group, or public school outside the immediate region please contact Jessie Vernon (jessie.vernon@ialr.org).

Business & Volunteer Involvement:

It takes hundreds of crew members (activity providers) and volunteers to make the Career ChoICE Youth Expo the amazing opportunity that it is for our regional students. There are numerous ways to participate and support the Career Expo. Whether you are an employer, employee, or retiree we hope you will consider joining us!

Role

Description of Responsibilities

Crew Chiefs

Organize an activity.  

Crew Chiefs are responsible for:

  1. Getting things organized with their organization and/or partnering organizations to ensure the success of their activity. Includes:

- Recruiting & scheduling crew members to man/run the activity during the event

- Securing equipment & supplies for the activity (you can request assistance from the Career ChoICE planning committee)

Submitting the Activity Sheet for your activity by  Aug. 2, 2019. (You can preview the Activity sheet before submitting it HERE.) This form serves as your confirmation to participation, and let's the planning team know exactly what your needs are, along with what activity name you'd like listed on the Student Activity Map.)

  1. Participating in/viewing the Crew Member Logistics Webinar Sept. 5, 2-3pm (the webinar will be recorded for later viewing) and ensuring all your fellow crew members within your organization watch it. (REGISTER for the webinar HERE.)
  2. Ensuring your activity is set up and ready to go during the scheduled "set-up" time on Sept. 24.
  3. Attending the one evening, two-day event and helping to ensure your activity runs smoothly. (You may wish to recruit a "co-chief" if your schedule doesn't permit you to participate in the multiple days of the event.)
Crew Members

Work/provide the hands on activities for the student attendees.

Crew members actively engage students in hands-on activities and conversation, sharing their passion for and details about their profession.

*Crew members are usually (but not always) recruited by a "Crew Chief"

It is highly recommended that all participating Crew Members participate in/view the Crew Member Logistics Webinar Sept. 5, 2-3pm (the webinar will be recorded for later viewing). (REGISTER for the webinar HERE.)

Volunteers

Volunteers help us ensure that the entire event runs smoothly!

Volunteers can help with setup or take-down; greet students as they arrive; help student groups navigate & transition from one Zone to another; help coordinate buses; get crew members, fellow volunteers, and visitors checked in; coordinate student lunches; etc.
